"The government-funded subsidies are available, here are the personal grant applications free government." I keep getting these emails mails all the time.
I had no doubt in my mind that this was a scam
I'm sure I'm not alone here. I was pretty sure it was some kind of scam. However, because I kept on getting these emails every day, I decided sit down and do a thorough research on the Internet about government grants. These are the questions I tried to answer:
- Do they really exist? Or is it another scam?
- If they exist, can ordinary people like me get one?
- If so what is the procedure?
- Is there an application process?
My shocking results
I was surprised at all of what I found out. I was wrong (again, "my wife added.) There was even a definition of these subsidies given freely. Federal grants are defined and comply fully with the Federal Grant and Cooperative Agreement Act of 1977, embodied in Section 6304 of Title 31, U.S. Code. So goes the story. Can you believe it? Federal grants do not really exist. I will not give here the definition because it is a bit of legal jargon that I can not understand.
It seems that there are over 900 grant programs offered by 26 different federal agencies grants for different purposes. Include Agriculture, Education, Employment, Food and Nutrition, Health, Housing and many more. This was incredible, these were the same categories of fake emails were talking about.
Where does the money come from? Of more than 88,000 different sources and exceeds 40 billion U.S. dollars each year.
- Government departments
- Public and private trusts
- Public and private foundations
So I can get one yourself?
Ok now I was convinced that these federal government grants or whatever you call, it was a scam and it was true. So I wanted know (actually my wife ..) if I could get one. I could think of a lot of reasons to get one, I'm sure anyone can. Basically, there are two requirements:
- You need to be 18 years old (I'm easily twice that age!)
- You need to be a citizen American
Unfortunately I am not an American citizen, I am here with a student visa doing my thesis. This disqualifies me for the application of these grants free personal. But I wanted to know more about these scholarships because I'm sure there are many American citizens who could use some free the grant money, especially given the current economic crisis.

Yes, that's the bitter truth. In addition, there is much competition and it would seem. Hundreds of thousands of people apply for these federal grants each year. Everyone wants a piece of the $ 40 million pie. Who does not?
