Commercial Vehicle Insurance
Commercial vehicle insurance vs. private: do I count as a commercial driver?

I work as a case manager for a nonprofit agency; much of my job entails transporting clients to appointments, the grocery store, etc. On my insurance policy, it asks if I use my vehicle for “commercial use”, which then lists examples such as pizza deliver, taxi/limousine services, etc.

Now, I know I need to check with my company to see if they offer liability coverage through the agency (probably not), but I have to ask the following:

- In the opinion of you Y!A folks anyhow, would you consider my job to be covered under the term “commercial use?”
- What is the difference, generally, between commercial and private vehicle insurance? Is commercial more costly? I can’t afford to pay any more; this is ridiculous.

You do need to let your insurance company know about this use of your vehicle and yes it is considered commercial. And yes it does generally cost more because you are using your vehicle more than a person that just uses their vehicle to commute and stays put all day at work and then commutes back home. Once you notify your company, they will endorse your policy to include the commercial use and you will be assured coverage in the event of an accident.

The non-profit agency where you work should also have hired and non-owned auto coverage to protect themselves in case there is an accident involving your vehicle while on an errand for them. I can assure you that if you have an accident while running one of these errands you will be sued and the non-profit agency will be sued.

I hope this information helps. Good Luck
