Health insurance for Pre-existing conditions ideas?
I’m about to leave my group insurance and need insurance that is not COBRA ($400 a month!). I do not want a HSA. Looking for ways to get insurance with my pre-existing condition (cardiomyopathy). I’ve heard that some organizations have insurance, like sam’s club etc? any body have suggestions? I live in Florida, no smooking, not obese and 27 yrs old.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but cardiomyopathy is an automatic decline with all insurance companies with which I’m familiar. Your only option for a viable insurance policy will be COBRA which you can keep for 18 months. In certain circumstances you can extend COBRA for an additional 11 months. After you’ve exhausted COBRA you are guaranteed a policy but the rates will be $2000 to $3000 per month.
The only other option is a medical discount card. Be very wary of these cards. They are not regulated by the Department of Insurance nor do the people that sell them need to be licensed. This means you have little recourse when you have problems with the plan. If you are tempted by the low price and claims of “save up to 80%” be aware that very few doctors actually take these cards. It does you little good if you have to drive 4 hours to find a doctor that will accept the card. Montana couldn’t find any doctors in the whole state that actually took the card and only one dentist who was on probation for unlawful activities so they banned the sale of the card and fined the company. Before signing up with any discount plan get a list of doctors. If they won’t give you a list consider it to be a scam. Call the doctors on the list to make sure they’re still taking the card (many don’t even know that they’re listed as a provider) and that they’re accepting new patients.
In my past dealings with hospitals and doctors I’ve found that the most discount any will actually give is 10%. Saving 10% off of a $200,000 medical bill, which is not unheard of with heart conditions, means you will still owe $180,000.
