Graduate students are satisfied with the health insurance plan

Graduate students at Virginia Tech have concerns about the health insurance plan offered by the university.

Students are the main problems with the current plan includes the cost for cover members of the family and preventive medicine coverage for prescription drugs, according to Laura Freeman, president of the Student Assembly graduates.

Southwest GM provides health insurance for graduate students. However, it was the only company that has agreed provide health insurance coverage for graduate students in technology.

"We're stuck with what we have," said Freeman.

In March 2009, Linsey Barker, former representative of the graduate students of the Board of Visitors acted as the voice of all graduate students.

Barker said that the plans should allocate more money for preventive medicine and prescription co-payments.

Graduate Students and their representatives want to be more viable with other universities of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.

These schools are considered Scheve peer institutions and should be comparable to Tech

Money is a major concern for students. Current levels of coverage include $ 50,000, $ 100,000 and $ 250,000 levels.

"(Graduate Students) have the choice of a maximum of $ 500,000 to $ 1 million to be competitive with our peers, "said Barker.

Currently, Tech pays 82.5 percent of the plan coverage of a student in the level of $ 50,000. However, if a student updates at a higher level of coverage, the amount of College wage does not change.

In addition, the university does not pay for spouses and children of graduate students in the plans. By adding families, students must pay an additional $ 8941 to $ 10,328 annual fee.

In addition, annual physical exams, immunizations and vaccines are not covered by the plans.

"There is no alternative," said Rebecca French student representative graduate of the BOV.

Any student may receive coverage, full time. The technology is now in its sixth year a 10-year plan with GM Southwest.

After 10 years, Tech tender open to all insurance companies in accordance Fred Weaver, director of risk management.

"I see no advantages or disadvantages," Weaver said. "He is there to students, if they want to use it. "

Because of complaints about graduates of health insurance, a review group work was designed to assess problems.

The group created a survey and ranked the concerns of graduate students and changes they would like.

According to French, there was not enough information for the BOV to examine the question.

The survey data "provided some information to management on the graduate students have problems attention to health, "said French.

The Finance and Audit BOV created a survey that was sent to graduate students on campus in Blacksburg.

About 1,700 responses were received and the Commission is collecting data.

The survey results will be presented to the BOV at its meeting in November. The meeting is open to the public.
