House Insurance Ireland

Rust car advice needed please?
So ok, I have a Mitsubishi Colt 1998. I had it for last 2 years. It didn’t have any problems with it what so ever. Except that for a last year it was just standing outside my house… because i couldn’t afford insurance for that year. I noticed that some rust started appearing even on the rims. I didnt check under the car, but obviously there is rust there aswell. The battery is “dead” now as it wasnt used for a year(i will recharge it…). As I dont have much knowledge about that rust situation with cars, could someone tell me is it ok for the car to just stand outside for a year(not garage). Will it greately affect the performance ect..
p.s. Also I live in Ireland were there is A LOT OF RAIN.. and little sunshine. thank you for your time people and any advice will be appreciated.

You have basically answered your own question. Leaving it out in the rain, with no protection, is death for cars. You should have at least given it a good coat of polish, put a cover over it, and started it every few weeks at least to keep the battery charged. you will have to get a new battery, the plates in the one in it will be probably be heavily sulphated and not take a charge.
There is not necessarily rust underneath it, but it would pay to get it on a hoist to check. The brakes may also be rusty, discs and drums it it has drums on the rear. Also the brake fluid would need changing, as it has probably absorbed water from the air, and maybe the wheel cylinders may also need replacing due to rust.
The rims may be ok, it will only be surface rust, but you never know for sure. The tyres may well need replacing too, as they would have developed a flat spot due to not turning, the wires in the walls get set in one position when at a standstill for a while.
