Analysis of Journal Communications (JRN)

Journal Communications (JRN) is comprised of seven companies, essentially different: The Milwaukee Sentinel, community newspapers, television stations, radio, telecommunications and printing services and direct marketing. The five segments of society not coincide exactly with the seven companies, however, I think an investor should analyze JRN on the basis of these seven companies and their constituent properties, rather than Just five reportable segments under way. Other reasons for this belief is described below. For now, suffice it to say that if the Communications Officer is divided into seven separate public companies, the combined market value of companies would be significantly higher than the current value of JRN's society. In short, the sum of the parts are more popular than the whole.

Communications Journal has an enterprise value of nearly $ 1 billion. Pre-owned income taxes are probably about 125 million dollars. Then Trade JRN eight times before the owner of the income tax. It is cheap.

Effective tax rate's Journal is 40%. It is an abnormally high rate. The Journal of media ownership is likely to generate more revenue from property taxes differently. The difference would matter, but for someone other than the purchaser of a large debt, the tax savings would not be a primary consideration. In assessing Journal as a buyer, is perfectly appropriate to treat the full tax burden of 40% as a reality. These taxes reduce the income of the owner of 50 million dollars.

With a profit after tax of the owner of 75 million and a value company 1 billion dollars, Journal of the owner's income yield is 7.5%. Remember that after-tax returns. Pre-book This tax is 12.5%. When evaluating a company, it is preferable to use production before tax for the comparison. To I know, 30 – year Treasury bond yielded commencing 4.63%. Thus, looking JRN current income alone, the action seems to offer a wide safety margin.

This is particularly true given that the average income of more protection against inflation bond yields. They do not offer a perfect protection. But with stocks, there is at least the possibility that the nominal cash flows will increase with inflation. Cash flows generated the bonds are fixed in nominal terms, and thus offer no protection against inflation.

When evaluating an investment long term, as an idea, I do not use a discount rate below 8%. JRN This reduces the safety margin significantly. Instead of being the difference between 12.5% and 4.63%, margin of safety officer is the difference between 12.5% and 8%. This is a safety margin? Maybe.

When evaluating a possible investment, first consider the risk of catastrophic loss. How big? And what are the chances? For my purposes catastrophic loss is defined as permanent loss of capital. The risk that overvalued a company is always greater than my risk of catastrophic loss, and I insist on a margin of safety. The catastrophic loss is one that removes any margin of safety.

I can make a bad investment without incurring a loss prevention. For example, most mutual funds investment is bad investment, because alternatives Underperform. However, mutual funds generally not carry a high risk of catastrophic losses. In fact, they generally have a low risk of catastrophic loss, because they are highly correlated with the general market.

It is more easy to understand this concept if one considers the assessment of both companies to write insurance. Even if the reality exceeds their expectations in nine out of ten, a terrible misjudgment in the tenth case can cause much damage. This is not only how the error much. It is too great they are.

Some populations, such as Google (GOOG), trade at prices that allow losses from a disaster considerable magnitude. Other stocks such as Journal Communications, trade at prices that allow only very small losses in the main. However, there also the question of probability. What is likely that Google shareholders suffer a catastrophic loss? I do not know. I am even willing to hazard a guess.

For Official Communications, I am ready to put my neck.

I think that an investment in JRN has a very low risk to principal – Considerably less than, say, an investment in the S
