Life Insurance Leads For Sale
How is work for a Texas insurance agent who is just starting off?

I am a recent college grad trying to figure out the best opportunity for me right now. I have several leads, but I have recently been offered a health and life insurance sales position. The recruiter told me I would probably make somewhere around 60,000 during my first year, give or take 15,000 depending on my performance, but I’m more worried about real opportunities as a sales agent. REALISTICALLY, is there the potential to make that much starting off if I’m doing well? Can these skills be used for another career outside of insurance? I know I’m asking dumb questions, but this decision is really killing me.

Is the potential to make $60,000 there, sure. But is it realistic, I do not think so. Over 90% of insurance agents who start in this career are gone before the first year ends. After that, of the <10% that remain, only about 20% of that sample is there after three years. Being an insurance agent is a tough career, the burnout rate is very high.

I think the recruiter is not being realistic. Sure, it is absolutely possible to make $60,000 in your first year from a technical standpoint, but I do not think it is very realistic. Being an insurance agent involves selling insurance to people who do not want to give you the light of day. It is a lot of hard work to even get your foot in the door to talk to them.

To answer your question about if those skills can be used outside of insurance, yes they can. Many business owners, if you ask them, at some point in their careers have worked as an insurance agent at some point. I think the skills you learn from the career are valuable. It teaches you how to sell. Selling insurance is not like selling a house or car; you cannot look at it, touch it, smell it, experience it. Insurance is basically a promise and a very intangible product. If you can learn how to sell insurance well, you are likely going to be a great salesperson. The skills and experience that you learn being an insurance agent are valuable and you can use them in careers outside of insurance. However, I strongly caution against taking a job as an insurance salesperson solely for the reason of gaining experience. It is very hard and you are paid for performance. I am not aware of many agents who will pay you a salary + commission.

Good luck.
