Universal Life Insurance Retirement

Variable Universal Life Insurance is right for us?
My wife and I recently started insurance variable universal life. We are paying about $ 600 a month toward the politics over what we are providing each of our 401k plans. We're both under 30. of age, and are trying to get a good start in our retirement. Should we invest in IRA or something again? We supported ourselves before we married, why we need a safe life at the moment, because they have no children yet? Our consultant works for New York Life, and is telling us that the variable universal policy is the best first step. I feel as if simply trying to maximize their commission instead of doing what's best for us. I know, I should have gone to an insurance salesman, but was recommended by a close friend. What should we do? Combined, we make $ 85,000 / year. I contribute 6% to my 401k, and my wife contributes 1%. We are the owners, no tenants. Others who have no other investments.
Do not get life insurance through your work? How is it put $ 600 a month in life insurance will benefit you? You can get a much better policy through the benefits of working for less money.
